What do you expect from good education?
For a start: the acquisition of knowledge, pure and simple.

And what else?
Understanding and interpretation, creativity and imagination,
experience and analysis, cultural competence and critical thought!

Sophistication and a wider horizon, a healthy balance of self esteem and respect for others, mental strength and responsibility, social skills ranging from empathy to moral courage, ideally with sound judgement for either. Good citizenship, if you like.

Can your education system meet your hopes and satisfy your expectations?

Is it stimulating, does it free the mind and empower talent,
can it kindle curiosity and encourage diversity?
Will it make promises and keep them?

Anything goes, really. A student might be looking for the opportunity to go to Brazil at short notice and possibly find the right match within 48 hours. Or perhaps a young lady wants to go to Germany for the summer holidays and within three weeks she’s on a plane to Hamburg.
However, the younger the “candidates” for an exchange and the more specific the profile you have defined, the longer it will take. The ideal solution is - so experience shows and common sense confirms (!) - a continuous build up of communication and mutual understanding over the course of about a year.

The program is designed for pupils and students aged between ten and nineteen years of age. It depends most of all on the personality and the attitude of the youngster in question and of course on how the family deals with the idea; of course an eight year old or a twen could just as easily go on an exchange this way. The greatest benefits are to be had from a step by step strategy, opting for a summer holiday exchange in a place not too far away around twelve, followed by a term abroad at fourteen or fifteen and giving it a go for a whole school year at sixteen or seventeen.

Shared Mindspace is a brainchild of the ParentalFusion ThinkTank. The idea has been tested intensively with pioneer members at ParentalPal.Org, you can read up on some of their stories in the Case Studies section. These reports are the start to a databank which will be available in early 2012 as a wiki for future reference. It will incorporate not only experience reports and knowledge from participants but also facts and figures collected from other highly valuable sources such as the CIA Factbook, the BBC Country Profiles and the accumulated knowledge of expat platforms like The Expat Exchange.
